This looks like a Canadian production… and it is! Shot in Toronto at a megaplex cinema that no longer exists but not sure where it’s supposed to be set as it’s never clear other than a fictional “Cotton Hills” but I love that it’s nearly entirely set in a movie theater. And despite being a G-rated Disney flick borrows a bit from POPCORN and the OG Phantom of the Opera (even features clips of that movie in the opening as well as pics and posters).
What’s really neat is how much this is a celebration to the movie-going experience and what a big deal it once was. Seems almost too on point that Mickey Rooney is in this film. Amusing that you can see he’s reading off cue cards for most of his scenes. Hey, whatever it takes to make it all work and have a legend in the movie.
