Wasn’t available streaming so I had to get the Blu from the library.
The recent chatter about the upcoming sequel had me wanting to revisit this. A lot a ppl are apparently Mad Onlineā¢ about the sequel trailer b/c it appears to be taking the story into the supernatural rather than reality based creepiness of this first film. I did not watch the trailer before this viewing b/c I just wanted to see this movie again having recalled enjoying it.
I do think this is a very good movie that is reminiscent of HOUSE OF THE DEVIL (babysitter alone in a creepy house with something evil bubbling below the surface) but not quite as effective despite some fun moments. What I like is that the audience has a bead on what’s going on knowing that the doll cannot be a living thing. Yet the movie leans so far into it to push that premise that you start to second guess a little… like I’m still not buying that the doll is living but damn they really want me to believe that.
For me I think it’s because we’ve had other films with a similar premise (HOUSEBOUND the most recent) that you know the story. The joy comes from seeing it unfold. This would’ve been great to see a packed theater with a bunch of teenagers. So many cool jump scares.
The Universal Blu-ray sucks complete ass. Just the movie and literally nothing else ‘cept a couple of “coming soon” trailers to start the disc (not even accessible in the main menu). I’d love a special edition release from Scream Factory.
So I watched the Brahms: The Boy II trailer afterwards. Very weird pivot for this story. From what I gather it looks like the doll is now possessed or something. This is unfortunate.
