Viewing Notes

RIP Terry Jones February 1, 1942 - January 21, 2020

Rather than watching a film to celebrate the life of Terry Jones (I plan to revisit The Holy Grail this weekend) I decided to view this documentary on Monty Python’s history in coming over to America. A friend of mine noted that he was thankful for the influence that Terry Jones and MP had on him during his formative years before he even knew who Terry Jones was (I’m paraphrasing, natch). That resonated with me b/c I grew up w/Monty Python on late nite PBS when I was a child. It was something forbidden that felt exciting to watch even if I didn’t understand most of what I was seeing. It was just bizarre to me.

It wasn’t until a friend’s older brother introduced us to the movies that I really started to get it and put it together. It’s really crazy to think about the influence that MP has had on popular culture and how it’s continued even as these greats are leaving us. So I figured this would be a nice doc to watch and it’s a good look at that early time period when they cracked the US market and how they grew from that. Some decent interviews w/the original members and those around them at the time as well as a few Hollywood directors and actors. Perhaps the only negative is the lack of women (there are a few women from the early days but no current comedians/actors) and no real deep dive on any of the topics/stages. It’s still fine for a short doc to give context to that time period which I appreciate.
