Viewing Notes

Watching this to determine if I should go see the third film in this series that’s out in the theaters tomorrow.

This is so damn dumb yet so endearing. All the story beats are the usual tropes seen in these kinds of movies: the pervy manager and the girl who quits only to join the other dance troupe, in-fighting, drugs, betrayal by a member to the rival dance troupe, etc. It’s all there and eye-roll inducing. Not even the dances are all that great. In fact there’s a club scene where all the other dance groups showcase moves better than the DDR team (the underdog team of the movie). Also the evil corporation dance team is pretty awful and their final routine in the competition is terrible. Shocked they didn’t get a better group of dancers and choreographers.

Almost everything about this movie is bad. Of course I enjoyed viewing it but this has a shitty screenplay. Imagining how much better this could’ve been had it not been so rife with all the obvious junk. Now I really want to see the sequel ABCD 2 and will likely go see STREET DANCER 3 (why they changed the name is beyond me).

I did like the final dance routine by DDR in which they modernize the classic Ganpati Bappa Morya song used in the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. It’s not super technical but just a nice nod to Hindi culture and it looks great. How they are able to pull this together in under 10 minutes is another level of belief this movie requires to enjoy it.
