Viewing Notes

Was able to get this from the Niles-Maine Library so I could view it before going to see Street Dancer 3 (the sequel yet w/a name change). This movie surprised me! It’s so much better than the previous movie that I’m shocked this has lower ratings at IMDb/TMDb than that film. Whereas the first movie is so silly and largely full of unimpressive dance routines, this one brings the goods and is also loosely based on a true story.

Of course being a overly long Bollywood flick there are some silly plot points and melodrama and overacting (mainly the non-Indian actors) but the primary cast is great and Vishnu (Prabhu Deva) returns as the guru/mentor to the Indian Stunners squad who want to compete in Vegas for the world dance title. It’s funny how they brought back Dharmesh Yelande, one of the main characters from the first movie who even has the same name here “D”, yet he’s not the same character? Weird choice. I do like the new cast with the lead couple of Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor, who is super sexy and a great dancer herself. Perhaps the first time I’ve seen abdomen makeup to highlight all the 6-packs on the guys (seriously, I’ve said this before in my notes on Bollywood flicks with super jacked lead actors; I’d love to work with their trainers for 6 months b/c these guys have the best physiques).

Was really happy to see Lauren Gottlieb return. She was one of the stars of the first film and here she too is a different character. However, she had one helluva makeover because she barely resembles the person she was in the previous movie. But she looks amazing and her dance skills have improved immensely. Glad she was included in the BTS extras talking about making the movie.

Worth noting that most of the dancing routines by all the countries represented in the competition look a lot like cheerleading routines you’d see in those competitive events with a little more dancing mixed in. So none of the routines are that good but decent enough (in comparison to say the STEP UP films) and the best dancing is seen from the local street performers and those not in the competition. There is one really fun routine by the Stunners where all the guys are dressed like Charlie Chaplin. There’s an amazing routine by another squad in India that really should’ve won.

I also love the montages of the Stunners squad running around and enjoying Vegas at night. Looks like they truly had a great time visiting and making the movie (the BTS extras also show some of this). When I see Vegas presented this way it always looks so cool and so fun… then I have to reel myself back in and recall how trashy it really is. But these movies do make me want to go back to experience it again. For only two days.

Wild that this is a Disney movie. Even opens w/the Disney animation/music with fireworks over the castle.
