Viewing Notes

Did not realize this was a Chicago movie until recently. Had I known I definitely would’ve watched this sooner. And it’s a real Chicago movie with lots of on location filming throughout the city and suburbs including Old Chicago! Off hand I cannot recall another movie that was shot there but damn that was so cool to see. I probably visited that same year (my dad was fond of taking the family there and I even celebrated my birthday there with a couple of my friends!).

Also did not realize this was a horror movie! So that was neat plus having Andrew Stevens present. He’s so young here (22 or 23) and I’ve always associated him with those steamy sex crime flicks from the 80s/90s. Seeing Cassavetes here had me wondering if I’ve ever seen him portray a non-villainous character. He does evil so well.

Overall not a great film and rather overstuffed at 2 hours which is probably why it doesn’t get any rep screenings in Chicago or included in horror marathons. But I give it a half star bump for its use of Chicago which is so nice to see. The entire sequence where Gillian (Amy Irving) escapes the Astor school and runs towards Lincoln Park you can view via streetview. It’s all still there including Lincoln’s statue. I may pay a visit there to see it.

The Water Tower filming is fun b/c Hester goes up the iconic escalators while Peter (Kirk Douglas) takes the glass elevator to meet her and they have a short meeting then it shows them both going back up the entrance escalator which makes no sense unless they physically leave Water Tower Place then return. But their conversation never breaks from inside the mall to that scene. Just funny to see that most people not familiar w/the setup wouldn’t recognize.

Now that I’ve seen this I’m sad that it’s not gotten a proper rep screening given the history and those involved in making the film. Would love to see this on the big screen.
