Viewing Notes

Wanted to revisit before seeing Birds of Prey this week. Haven’t seen since it was in theater on release. Wasn’t crazy about it then but enjoyed it more on this viewing, esp. DeadShot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). Both are so good and so funny they carry the movie over the dry spots and almost make up for the awful Joel Kinnaman performance. He’s just not good for this part and drags down every scene he’s in, which is a lot! Feels like they needed a better counterweight to Smith’s DeadShot, kinda how The Rock was for the Fast & Furious films.

Fortunately the charisma and presence of DeadShot and Quinn are exceptional and really make this even worth viewing. I laughed at nearly every thing Harley says even if it’s just an “oh?” Back when BOP was announced I questioned the need for that but this viewing of SS confirms that she totally deserves her own film. I’d also like a DeadShot film as well. I’m gutted that he won’t be in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad. I do love that Will Smith is top billed in this movie.

What really tanks this film is the terrible story. Just a gobbledygook of a dumb fetch and rescue mission that is so goofy especially when you pull back the lens. Amanda Waller wants to create the SS yet also creates the situation that results in using the SS? I just hate the entire Enchantress and her brother plot point (Enchantress herself is fine but her purpose here is wasted). I hate when Flag breaks the tracker and tells the team they are free to go. WTF it makes no sense. Then to have the entire SS team go “sure let’s go do this thing even tho we might be killed.” Every damn one of them would’ve bailed if they knew they were free from having their heads blown off. That bar scene is great, tho.

Watched the extended cut and really have no idea what was added since I could barely recall most of the minor details from my first watch 4 years ago. Maybe it was the Harley / Joker stuff? Most ppl are down on Leto’s Joker but I’m fine with it and his performance. I like the relationship between them.

Depending on how I feel after BOP I may watch the theatrical cut. I just really love Will Smith and Margot Robbie in this. Shit, I should watch FOCUS again and pretend it’s really Deadshot and Harley Quinn. There’s a animated SS flick that I think I enjoyed. I may have to view that again.

This viewing also made me sad that we won’t get Affleck as Batman again. I dig his portrayal of the character.
