Viewing Notes

Well Go USA recently released this new Jackie Chan flick so I requested it from the library system before any location had it on hand so I could get it as soon as it was available. I don’t recall this getting a theatrical release here but if it did it would’ve only been at River East for a week or two but this it totally the kind of movie I’d go there to see on the big screen. Very reminiscent of MONSTER HUNT in visuals and tone. Elane Zhong is stunning in her flowing red gown spinning around flying and fighting. Of course some of the CG is a tad wonky but doesn’t diminish the film for me.

I like the story of Chan being this demon hunter traveling the planet to capture demons into his book with the help of his friendly demon friends. It’s basically a Chinese yokai flick with a variety of yaoguai and mogwai and whatnot. The central plot is convoluted yet still can be followed to get the gist of it. The world is neat even if it doesn’t make practical sense. The entire film was shot on a soundstage and during the credits they run some of the BTS footage (I love that Jackie still does this for his films!). I wish there was some actual featurettes on the disc for more of that plus interviews but it’s pretty bare bones (just trailers and previews). One of the downsides of most Well Go releases.

I rather enjoyed this comedy fantasy adventure and would love to see a sequel w/Chan’s character returning for another epic adventure.
