Viewing Notes

This short was on the Pandora and The Flying Dutchman dvd from Kino. Manolete was probably the most famous bullfighter of all time and was the inspiration for the bullfighter character in that feature film. This short has archive footage with a voice over that tells the story of this man and his greatness until his early death at 30 years old. Killed by a bull in what I would call karma given that Manolete killed over 1000 bulls in his short career. I’m definitely no fan of bullfighting but I’m glad that they edited this to leave of most of the animal trauma.

The way the arena and crowd is shot cheering this man as he torments the animal it really feels like this was a progression from gladiator games in ancient rome / greece. Hard to imagine people cheering this brutality but yeah I guess it’s in our nature, unfortunately.
