Since I watched the recent MONSTER ISLAND (2019) last night and Prime also had this Monster Island, which I viewed a few years ago, I decided to give it another spin bc I didn’t know back then that Mary Elizabeth Winstead is one of the stars of this movie! And she is great in an otherwise goofy homage to 1950s giant bug attack flicks. Guess she was 19yo when she made this and I may not have recognized babyface MEW if I didn’t already know that was her.
The movie is fine but also shows that it’s not easy to recreate that B-movie vibe and have it be genuinely entertaining. What’s cool is that MEW decides to go on the rescue for Carmen Electra and finds an old neckless. The neckless channels some ancient princess thru her and she leads the team to the lair of the giant bugs. Nice to see Adam West but also made me sad he’s no longer with us. He looked like he really enjoyed making these kinds of films.
It is pretty cool they used praying mantis which gave me Son of Godzilla vibes. Kamakuras FTW!
