Viewing Notes

Challenging film not unlike Tsai Ming-Liang’s other works that I’ve seen but perhaps more so here since it’s never really completely clear how the events line-up and there’s almost no dialogue (zero dialogue from both of Tsai’s muses Lee Kang-Sheng and Chen Shiang-Chyi). Initially I thought we were viewing three different timelines but that proved incorrect as the story progressed. I suppose what makes it confusing is that Lee Kang-Sheng is portraying two different characters (the beaten homeless guy and the bedridden invalid). Viewing this I thought they were the same character at different points it their story.

Knowing how this plays out I would like to view it again at some point. Also I was slightly agitated in my screening for the first half due to a few people sitting near me. I got up and moved to another seat on the other side of the auditorium. Also this was supposed to be a 35mm print but something happened or they didn’t get the print so it was a DCP. It looked very nice.

One thing that I really like about the few Tsai Ming-Liang films I’ve seen is his long take on one shot / scene and just holds it. That coupled w/the the lack of dialogue really makes for this meditative, dream-like quality; you’re watching still images or street life floating across the screen communicating only by expressions or compositions. It’s really great to see in a dark theater on the big screen.
