Overview

In the year 2050, mankind is extinct. The last survivors travel back in time to stop the invader, Killgis, aided by roboticist Kenichiro Kurenai. When they arrive at the past, they start to build a giant robot, Red Baron, and the pilot of the Red Baron races against time aided by reinforced humans to identify the alien in a fierce battle which starts in Tokyo for the survival of Earth. This is a re-imagining of the 1970s TV series’ “Silver Kamen” and “Super Robot Red Baron”.

Viewing Notes

Another movie on the DKUTV schedule that I didn’t even know about it until they announced it for Tokusatsu night (I guess there are two tokusatsu nights each week?). Also I thought this was an anime but it’s a live action Red Baron flick pitting him against the Black Baron in downtown Tokyo. I always enjoy viewing battles in Tokyo and figuring out where they are. This one was pretty easy b/c of the RICOH Tower and the Wako building w/the famous Seiko clock in the heart of Ginza. I sometimes believe they use this iconic spot bc of Godzilla ‘54.

This is a wild movie with a terrible title. Not sure where the title originates since it’s about a group of humans from 2050 returning to present day 2018 to convince a scientist inventor to build a robot (Red Baron!) that will prevent the post-apocalyptic rule of the Black Barons. The inventor agrees only if his brother, a hot-headed boxer, can be the pilot. So they wrangle him and in doing so the aliens already on Earth kidnap the inventor and force him to activate the Black Baron they’ve been building. Then the big battle ensues.

This is a pretty cool flick for the premise and excellent robot designs. There’s also a future human w/a battle suit that resembles a mash-up between the new Ultraman anime and Casshern. He has some hand-to-hand combat scenes w/the aliens. There’s a lot packed into this 80 minute flick and not all of it works (the quick editing around the fights for one). But it’s definitely a film I’d like to see again and own a nice Blu if available. The broadcast feed blown up on my HDTV didn’t look great as usual but I prefer viewing on my TV over my laptop.

What is strange is that there is no military or police presence and really no pedestrians either during the final big battle. Could’ve have been a budget constraint but really odd given what’s going down (two giant robots duking it out in Ginza and near the Diet Building).

I’ll have to track this one down as I do really like seeing a modern take on Red Baron.
