Viewing Notes

Had I seen this in college around the time of its release it would have been an amazing gateway to foreign / arthouse cinema. Alas I did not see it then nor any foreign / arthouse films in college (pretty sure my film class didn’t really screen anything outside of the Hollywood system other than the usual things like Arrival of a Train and Trip to the Moon, which I don’t count altho I did see AKIRA so that’s something).

This has so many of Almodóvar’s signatures and I love it. Really fun story and excellent with many of his usual crew. Gorgeous colors and set dressing. Amusing interplay between the characters. I watched the extras on the Criterion disc that included interviews w/Pedro and the guy who brought the film to the NYFF. Oddly no BTS footage even tho there is BTS from this movie on the TIE ME UP TIE DOWN blu.

I really want to watch his older work to see how he got to this point in his style.
