Viewing Notes

Curious if this Statham led film got a theatrical release b/c I feel as tho I would’ve gone to see it. Unless it was limited or only got a week or so. I’m not familiar w/the series of books this character is taken from but I could tell rather quickly after the first major sequence at the Ohio state fair that this had to be based on a book/character. Just has that feel… the thief with honor thing, an anti-hero with a moral code.

There’s no real surprises here if you’re familiar w/that formula: protag gets double-crossed then plots his revenge. I was surprised when Jennifer Lopez appears at the 36 minute mark as I didn’t know she was in this movie! Yeah I probably saw the cover when I got it from the library but didn’t retain that glimpse. So that was cool even tho this really isn’t her best performance (she’s no a convincing real estate agent). However, she does play well against Statham’s Parker without overshadowing that character so it’s an okay supporting role for her.

Despite being a little long it’s a decent film for Statham portraying a character that isn’t completely invincible a la Transporter. He does get banged up quite a bit. Reminds me a lot of his character in Wild Card. All the extras are short featurettes w/the director, producer, and a few of main cast.  I would like to see more of this character since there are so many books in the series but I’m guessing that’s not gonna happen. Author Donald E. Westlake also penned the Payback novel which was made into a few films that I still haven’t seen so maybe I’ll check those out now.
