Viewing Notes

Happy 30th Anniversary to this movie, released on this day 30 years ago! Was very happy that Netflix had it available since I don’t own this movie and the library is no longer an option.

So an odd little fact. I saw this movie in theater 30 years ago however it wasn’t on initial release but rather a second run theater in the summer (so maybe late May / early June). It was an old classic one screen cinema in downtown Corvallis, Oregon where I was spending the summer in 1990. I didn’t remember much about the movie but definitely remember the theater. I believe it was the Whiteside Theater.

Funny b/c when I last saw this a few years ago I attributed that viewing to the State Theater but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the theater now that I’ve seen the Whiteside Theater marquee.

Anyways, this is fun movie albeit not a good movie. I think it’s another one that kids born in the 80s really adore (just like they adore The Goonies, which is not good). I’m not nostalgic for this despite having seen it in theater back then. I was a big fan of the comics but when the IP was sanitized for Saturday morning cartoons, which this movie is based on, is when I no longer cared. I still love the original TMNT. And I do like part of this movie (the “Leonardo watching over the recovering Raphael” makes me tear up). It’s just a little too family safe for me.
