The Spider and the Fly (1938)

Directed by Harry Fulscher, Lillian Fulscher

Documentary | Short

Overview

Few amateur films with sound were produced in the 1930s and fewer remain extant. A charming artifact that demonstrates the expressive possibilities and technical limitations of amateur talkies, “The Spider and the Fly” includes a backyard Labor Day gathering, a trip to the Riverview Amusement Park, and a homemade Halloween parade of witches and ghouls.

Viewing Notes

This short film is a restoration commissioned by Chicago Film Society of old home movies compiled from 1938s. I love viewing old films like this of actual footage taken at the time. My dad told me stories of Riverview Amusement Park in Chicago when he and my uncle used to go there when they were kids. Cool to see it here. The halloween stuff is bonus.
