The film depicts the life of a truck driver Sucha Singh and his wife Balo. He leads an independent life, playing cards with his friends and spending time with his mistress, and comes home only once a week. However, he expects his wife to play the traditional role of a devoted wife. One day Balo gets late, trying to save her sister from the advances of a lecherous villager. Viewing Notes

Back on my bullshit w/MUBI.

This is basically a mumblecore hindi film decades before mumblecore was a thing. Very minimal and very little dialogue. Plenty of pauses on scenes and stark photography yet distinctly about relationships.

It’s also quite sad watching this woman go to great lengths to prepare a meal for her husband and take it to him. However, he’s an asshole. While the surface level may be an indictment of this culture, the overriding commentary is the oppression of women stuck in a role defined by constructs regardless of culture. Definitely not the typical indian movie. This also may be the oldest indian film I’ve seen to date.
