Viewing Notes

Wasn’t able to see the previous film but fortunately there’s a quick recap of the events that went down in that film that set the stage for the continuation in this rather tragic sequel.

It’s easy to sympathize with Reiko (Yoko Minamida) being trapped in a bad marriage to a much older man who treats her like shit. It’s a bad situation that has the viewer rooting for her to break free and start a new life with Tachibana, a handsome man who seems like he really does care for her. Her plight is just as relatable now as it was in 1950s.

The other story with the older mother having an affair with a man her age is also frustrating b/c her teenage children don’t want her to re-marry. So they make her life difficult. Neither of these stories has a happy ending, esp. Reiko situation. Most of the film is her story and quite heartbreaking to watch.

This was my first Mubi viewing since last fall when I terminated my subscription. Decided to take advantage of the free 3 months offer due to the coronavirus.
