This Is a Recorded Message (1973)

Directed by Jean-Thomas Bédard

Animation | Experimental | Short

Overview

This experimental animated short takes a critical look at consumerism in a material world. Thousands of cut-out ads are presented in increasingly fragmented, rapid succession. The film’s disorienting and hectic pace seeks to interrogate the extent to which seductive advertising is a shockingly strong force in shaping our desires, needs, and lives in contemporary capitalism.

Viewing Notes

National Film Board of Canada placed a bunch of short films on their website including this one which looked very interesting.

Really dig this. It’s like something you’d see in an installation in MOMA or MCA. Images of people and things cut from magazines or newspapers used to convey emotion/sentiment within consumerism leading ultimately to cynicism. Love how this was crafted and edited.
