For Miyazaki Monday + Anime World on DKUTV: Isao Takahata night!
At the time this was the most expensive animated film in Japan. It’s clear when you watch with all the beautiful animation and painted backdrops. This is around the time when Takahata struck up a friendship with Hayao Miyazaki before they would begin collaborating on projects (and ultimately forming Studio Ghibli).
The story is a nice hero journey where Horus has to prove himself to the stone giant to wield the Sun Sword. A demon warlord attempts to thwart those plans and sends his sister Hilda who enchants the villagers with her magical songs to betray Horus but he’s so good hearted he still helps the villagers. Really good stuff. I don’t know if there’s a good home video release of this but there should be!
