Second feature in the Nobuhiko Obayashi tribute night (he passed away on April 10). This is probably the third adaptation of this novel that I’ve seen (the others are the more recent anime and live action features).
Did not really dig this all that much. It’s interesting bc I think this is a better film story-wise than Black Jack (Visitor in the Eye) yet I enjoyed Black Jack a lot more. This adaptation as all the components but I don’t think Ōbayashi does much to elevate the material. A few of his touches are present but overall I found this to be a bit dull. As in I would not want to view it again whereas I def want to revisit the others I’ve seen this year.
I can accept that even an auteur like Ōbayashi isn’t gonna drive home every run or get on base every at-bat (and I’m sure there are fans of this film since it has a favorable rating on the DBs).
Perhaps the most interesting thing here is how this story is adapted compared to others. And it’s been adapted many times!
