Viewing Notes

DKUTV programmed both GANTZ live action films and having not seen either (I’ve only seen the animated feature Gantz:0 which is on Netflix) I definitely didn’t want to miss them. I’ve seen a few episodes of the anime but despite the popularity it never really grabbed me so when the live action movies came out I didn’t have a big interest at the time. However, seeing them both via DKUTV seemed like a good opportunity to finally check them out.

The story is strange and it make sense this was an anime series (based on the manga) because there is a lot going on. Not sure how much is retained in the live action movie but I think it services the material okay. I like most of the movie even if it quickly moves forward to cram so much of the plotting into its 2+ hour runtime (and of course, only tells half the full arc of the story since they made a sequel to finish it).

It’s a unique spin on getting another chance to live after accidentally dying. The mysterious black sphere brings back the dead to live again but to hunt rogue aliens living among humans. If the “reborn” person is killed during the hunt, then they are forever dead. But if they can accumulate enough points they get a chance to go back to their former lives and have their memory erased. Or they can chose another former player to return from the forever dead status. It’s wild.

The “reborn” players that survive each hunt and successfully capture / kill the alien continue to amass points and become better at their tracking & fighting skills. Each new hunt brings in new “reborn” players that recently died who need to be educated quickly to avoid dying. Of course many do die during the hunt. All of this I really like; it’s the action of facing a new alien w/different abilities the team has to overcome. The drama segments when they aren’t hunting the aliens are fine for the character development but slow things down. I’m sure this is handled better in short episodes of the tv series.

This movie is good enough that I would like to view a better transfer / Blu-ray. I’ll have to request the Blu once the library re-opens.
