Viewing Notes

Happy Anniversary to this movie released 39 years ago OTD in Italy! Because of its anniversary it was mentioned a lot in my TL today and because I watched another Fulci movie last night (the very odd and awful black comedy TOUCH OF DEATH) I figured I’d give this another spin. Several ppl noted that this is the best or favorite of the Gates of Hell trilogy, which was another reason why I wanted to give it another look (because it hasn’t been my fave of those three).

This viewing p much confirmed that. I like this movie and give it points for the supreme gross out VFX but overall it’s too corny to elevate it over CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD and HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, in my book. That’s not to say those other two aren’t corny but it’s more my nostalgia w/those having lived with them in my memory for much longer. I have only seen THE BEYOND in my more recent adult life (in the past 20 years) whereas I saw both CotLD aka GATES OF HELL and HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY on release in the theater back in the early 80s. Both were such memorable experiences that I’ve not forgotten, each with specific moments at the theater. So I’m more fond of them over THE BEYOND.

I’ll probably give both of those another watch soon bc why not. It will be interesting to see all three in a short span and compare. I don’t wanna sell THE BEYOND short b/c it does have some cool imagery and those extreme practical effects. However, it just doesn’t do it for me like those other two. I will say that it’s a much more fun movie to view with an audience and hear those reactions. I believe this is the first time I’ve viewed this since seeing in 35mm at the Music Box.

Looks like the last two viewings logged here were both 35mm screenings at the Music Box. Definitely a fun crowd movie.
