I don’t think the intent was was make a dark comedy but it reads that way to me. Initially I just enjoyed the photography and variety of camera / filming employed (there’s sequences where it looks like they filmed in super-8 and others shot on a phone in addition to whatever digital pro camera they used). However, as this story slowly carries on in this mundane daily experience of this older woman adapting to small town life and her own aging issues, the movie transforms into this sly dark comedy where the viewer is totally in on the joke (set up in only the first opening minutes). I smiled often knowing what was really happening. Definitely a different story than the usual which I dug. The final shot is incredible.
What is also neat is that it really feels like a documentary, a testament to the great actors here.
