Viewing Notes

First feature on DKUTV in their Moon double feature night. This was another unseen Mifune flick that I was glad to finally watch (guess it was a regular title on Hulu/Filmstruck via Criterion?). The story is yet another adaptation of Taketori Monogatari, which was most recently adapted by Studio Ghibli as The Tale of Princess Kaguya.

This version is fine. A lot of it feels more like actors struggling to present the material like a stage play, because it has that feel to it. Mifune at 67yo is good but after the first act doesn’t get much screen time. The majority of the movie is really about the princess and her suitors.

My favorite thing is the miniature work with the sea dragon. Also features Megumi Odaka in her first movie role before she’d go on to Godzilla as the reoccurring character Miki Saegusa.
