Viewing Notes

Keeping the Fulci train rolling with this period piece set during the Middle Ages Italy. tbh it’s an odd thing to see a Fulci helmed film where he’s playing it straight with little to no exploitive elements. Sure, there’s torture and some nudity / abuse but nothing over the top. Of course it may have been perceived quite differently at the time (in fact I read that there were protests from the Catholic Church for how it is depicted in the movie). Also worth noting that the cut I viewed was trimmed by 10 minutes so it’s possible that more salacious and/or violent material was included.

The rating on IMDb is favorable but I found the majority of it to be somewhat dull. Reminded me of Jess Franco’s takes on Marquis du Sade’s work (ex. JUSTINE). This film was the selection for the #slutstuff live tweet (every Thursday) so a link was posted to view it but I just downloaded the file to watch later.

I’d consider viewing this again if it were the original cut.
