This was the final episode of season two of Masters of Horror and I guess the last episode of the series since it was only two seasons. I think it’s cool that they included a Japanese director to cap each season (Miike’s IMPRINT was the last episode of season one). Also didn’t realize that some episodes or at least this one ran longer than an hour.
I’ve only seen a few of Norio Tsuruta’s films (all recently) but this is definitely something he’d cook up. And on par with his other work I’ve seen: decent thriller with some crazy gore gags. I would’ve preferred an entire Japanese cast but understand why he probably had to use an American lead and shoot mostly in English for the MoH series (Miike had to do the same thing). The story still works but that lead actor isn’t very good but at least Tsuruta pokes fun at him being a gaijin (the dummy even tips his taxi driver, which is an amusing faux pas for this film but the character has been in Japan for 2 years and would’ve known better. whatever).
Of course I like the brief scenes shot on location in Shinjuku next to Shinjuku Park Tower (location of the Tokyo Hyatt where LOST IN TRANSLATION was filmed). It’s one of the most recognizable skyscrapers in Tokyo somewhat near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bldg.
