Viewing Notes

This is a great terrible movie! And it’s so 1980s, specifically late 80s with a particular kind of style different than early 80s or mid 80s. It’s like they really, really wanted to capture that specific moment in time. Wow.

The alternate title is WELCOME TO SPRING BREAK. Holy shit that would’ve been hilarious to see the marketing for that bc that’s a sex comedy title.

Why the movie is great: three journeyman actors as the a-dults John Saxon, Michael Parks and Lance LeGault plus a neat killer with unusual kills. All wrapped up in this late 80s spring break collage of colors and fashion and stupidity.

Why it’s terrible: characters doing dumb things in film they wouldn’t do in real life (ex. sneaking up behind someone holding a gun; no one would do that in RL). All the small beach town tropes around spring break and covering up the murders. Also has that weird 80s slasher trope where a non important character likes to goof with makeup and pretend he’s been killed or whatever. What was the deal with that in 80s horror?

But. This movie is a goldmine and I’m shocked it hasn’t screened at any of the 24hr marathons (I know I say this often here but this one truly belongs in those marathons). KinoLorber recently released this on Blu and I wanted to get it but the price has never come down. Hopefully it will someday and I can get it during a sale.

I am curious how much directing Lenzi did so maybe there’s some features in the Blu that go into his participation bc I read he quit the film before production.
