This was the third feature in the weekly Projection Booth watch party. When this started I wondered what version of this we were watching. Four hours and 40 minutes later I knew it was the touring version. Joe Dante took this version around to a few select cities 8 years ago doing an intro and Q&A. I missed it in Chicago b/c I heard about it after the fact, I think. It screened at the Nightingale the evening after Joe was here for a Gremlins 2 / The Hole double feature at MBT, which I did attend.
I was sad I missed this “movie” because it sounded really neat and totally my kind of thing. Yep, it totally is and would’ve been a treat to see in a theater with a bunch of other folks. Also it’s an endurance test, for sure, at that near 5 hour runtime. Yet it’s a film that even if you missed a bit here or there you really wouldn’t miss anything. It’s like a stream of consciousness, hyper active channel flipping assemblage of movie clips, commercials, news reports, music performances all (mostly) tied around 1950s science fiction B-movies.
It jumps around comedy bits from the Marx Brothers to Abbott and Costello between movies like Attack of the 50ft Woman and Amazing Colossal Man and other giant monster attack films like The Giant Claw and The Giant Gila Monster. Commercial breaks and news clips and other weird bits are interspersed. The Bufferin commercials are used a lot and are very amusing.
After seeing this I’d love to hear Joe discuss it as it’s clearly a passion project of a kid that grew up watching a lot of television and bad movies.
