The Kobayashi family finally are able to move out of their tiny, cramped Tokyo apartment to the suburban house of their dreams. But things are not as perfect as they seem: the house is infested by termites and the family starts going crazy. As the Kobayashis’ house begins to crumble, so does the sanity of its inhabitants. Father Katsuhiko takes it upon himself to keep them from the asylum… at any cost.

This was the flick in DKUTV’s Japanese Sinema slot for Saturday. However, it didn’t start at midnight as programmed. The entire next slot (The Glorious Asuka Gang! episodes feature Megumi Odaka) played then the next slot started (Adventures of Captain Marvel) so I went on Facebook to see if Josef was still online and he was. I asked him if THE CRAZY FAMILY was removed but he said he forgot to add it to the rotation so he stopped the broadcast and started this movie. So it was much later but whatever, at least it played and I really wanted to see it since I’m not sure how else to view it domestically.
Anyways, this is a very absurdist film about a very messed up family that moves from Tokyo to the suburbs and then things start falling apart. The father is obsessed with a termite infestation while the rest each have their own obsession. The father thinks everyone is crazy and ultimately wants to do a group suicide. Then hell really breaks loose. It’s a wild movie that is fascinating while not being entirely very good for most of the runtime. But it’s very unusual and quite dark.
