Viewing Notes

Was really on board with this breakup flick for the better part of the first half then it started losing me. It’s a shame b/c I really like Miriam Yeung but perhaps not in such a melodramatic role (she’s fantastic in DRINK DRANK DRUNK). Yet here she has to be the one that can’t get over her younger boyfriend (Shawn Yue) and it’s a bit annoying how cloying her character is while trying to make her seem strong. It doesn’t work. Yue’s character isn’t any better and tbh I don’t like either of them.

Mini Yang is good in a thankless role as the rebound girlfriend but she’s done dirty. As is Xu Zheng’s Sam, the sorta rebound boyfriend for Yeung’s Cherie. Probably the other aspect that soured me since these rebound relationships start around the mid-point of the film. It was funny to see Ekin Cheng as himself in a cameo role.

I do like the photography and how Beijing, in particular, is shot. Everything is so glossy and beautiful, a side not often seen in movies featuring Beijing. Director Pang Ho-cheung also directed DREAM HOME, which is kinda nuts since that couldn’t be farther away from this type of movie. But very cool nevertheless. He directed LOVE IN THE PUFF which establishes these characters prior to this film. I’d be up for viewing that. As it stands this is a soft 6/10 for me, giving credit to the production and acting even tho I didn’t care for how the story unfolds or the main characters.
