DKUTV programmed this for their Chinese Takeout slot yesterday but I saw it was on Prime so I skipped up. But I still wanted to see it b/c I thought I hadn’t seen it but of course I did back when I did my 100 Kung Fu flicks project 5 years ago (honestly can’t believe that it’s already been 5 years since I did that). When I saw Sammo Hung’s fake teeth I realized that I had seen this but forgot a lot of it as I tend to do these days.
Was nice to revisit esp. after viewing a Shaw Production in the morning. The fighting styles are so different. This movie has a lot of form fighting; precise movements, strikes and counters rather than the mayhem sword slinging and whatnot in early Shaw films. Shaw would eventually incorporate more form fighting esp. when they were developing the Venom Mob. Also this movie doesn’t feature any female characters unlike most Shaw flicks.
Anyways, this is a cool flick to see a young John Woo still honing his craft. Now I really want to see Woo’s Last Hurrah for Chivalry and I’m sad that I missed it was it was on Prime.
