Overview

High school student Shun Takahata is bored. Bored with the day-to-day monotony of school and life, he prays for change, for something exciting. One hundred percent my shit. Forgot all about this movie until DKUTV programmed it. Glad to have finally watched it. Looked so good (via Twitch app) that it had to be a Blu and sure enough Funimation released it. WTH they have shitty marketing bc I had no idea this got a release here.

This is one of those films where you know from the start that it’s a based on a manga. I’m not familiar with this one but it’s so similar to other HS survival stories. However, I’m tired of the “one kid in group is evil” trope that all these share. That said I really like the use of different traditional toys, for lack of a better word, as the challenges. Since this was a worldwide phenomenon it would’ve been neat to see what the teens in other countries were facing. In this way it reminded me of CABIN IN THE WOODS.

Between this and LESSON OF EVIL it seems like Miike was trying to make his own Battle Royale. Neither of these reached those heights but I appreciate the swings he’s taken.
