Viewing Notes

Normally I don’t view DKUTV’s Space Station Europa feature film until the rebroadcast later in the evening b/c it conflicts w/Spotlight Hour @ 6pm (Pokemon thing) but I decided not to do Spotlight and I’m so tired I don’t think I can stay awake for the late screening. This worked out b/c this movie is an early evening kind of flick (w/daylight still out). Very seventies when unexplained mysteries were all the rage. I grew up on those Easter Island moai statues, being completely fascinated by their existence. We also had curiosities like Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster and the Bermuda Triangle that were big deals back then. Oh and UFOs. This movie brings two of them together.

Anyways, this film has a big HOLY MOUNTAIN vibe. It just lacks Jodorowsky’s provocative sub-plotting and imagery and the more religious allegories. SUNS does have some socio-political connections, however, and came out the year before HOLY MOUNTAIN. Here, this small group of folks are selected I suppose due to their beliefs in astrology and other pseudosciences that ultimately brings them together at Easter Island where they somehow communicate w/aliens responsible for the statues. But the aliens get a look at the true nature of Earth’s humanity and say “nah, we’ll pass. See ya!” At least that was my takeaway.

I dig this movie and wish the source transfer had been better. Looks like it was a VCD that was digitized so not so hot on my TV. But totally watchable and it was neat to see the desolate landscape of Easter Island. Too often most photos seem to beautify those statues so it was nice to see them this way and yet I was still envious of these actors getting to spend time on the island.
