Viewing Notes

Finally got back to my 20 in 20 project with a DVD I got from the library back in March! Since the library has re-opened for returns and new requests I figured it best to watch and return. Despite having a 1999 release year this movie wasn’t officially released until 2000 (it premiered at Cannes then later at TIFF hence the 1999). We saw it on VHS the following year. I dunno if there has been an upgraded Blu release but this film sure could use one if not. The only upside to this old Artison DVD is all the bonus features w/interviews w/Jarmusch, Whitaker and RZA.

The movie is great! I have only vaguely recalled bits and pieces of it but mostly had forgotten large portions of it down the memory hole. Whitaker is really good in this stoic role and the banter between him and ice cream truck man is wonderful. I like how Jarmusch crafted this story and made his main character exceptional at this one thing. This is another one that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.

This was an unexpected Forest Whitaker double feature day after viewing PHONE BOOTH earlier.
