This morning I watched a bunch of the extras on the BATMAN FOREVER Blu. There’s quite a lot including a commentary track with Joel Schumacher that I won’t get to. This short BTS featurette was produced for television as part of the promotion for the movie. It’s really bizarre bc it’s full of spoilers! Chris O’Donnell is the host and walks thru the different components like the origin (Joel introduces Bob Kane to the camera!), the characters (each primary star gets to talk about their role) and the general world building (the sets are huge and mostly practical).
What’s neat is seeing the movie scene spliced with the BTS filming of that scene for a few of the significant moments like when Chase uses the bat signal to booty call Batman. I could’ve watched another hour of this type of material. Fortunately the other extras cover more of the filmmaking. I don’t think the Blu looks or sounds that great for the BF film but I wouldn’t mind having it with all those extras (I’d really like to hear Schumacher’s commentary).
It’s also wild to see this group of actors at different points in their career. Val Kilmer was at the height of his power and steadily declined after this movie. Nicole Kidman was a star on the rise as was Jim Carrey who had only come off THE MASK and DUMB AND DUMBER. Tommy Lee Jones was established having done THE FUGITIVE only two years prior in addition to other movies. Tho emotionless he expressed his enjoyment in doing a comic book villain and spending time with Bob Kane. From the movie it does seem like he’s having a blast.
