Was happy to see this on the new release shelf at my library. I really like the graphic novel but it’s been long enough since I’ve read it that I forgot most of the story other than it involved a decent chunk of Batman’s Rogues Gallery plus Superman. I own the books so I’ll probably revisit those at some point b/c it is really good.
This animated adaptation is almost great. There are a lot of things I really like (Batman & Catwoman teaming up!) but it does feel a bit rushed compared to the book. At least how I remember it. I like that there are so many primary characters involved in this story; basically Hush uses them to enact a very personal revenge on Batman. I didn’t care much for how many of these characters were rendered esp. Catwoman. She just doesn’t have the “it” factor like she had in the comic. Granted Jim Lee’s artwork in that book is off the charts. But she’s not all that appealing here. Same for Joker and The Riddler. It’s like a weird mashup of the TAS look with the more modern style we’ve seen in recent DC animated flicks. And it’s not a good look. Would’ve preferred they went with either of those rather than this in-between look. It’s almost like they wanted to desexualize the characters, which is odd choice given what happens in this story.
My other nitpick is the motivation of Hush which isn’t handled very well. Nor are his extraordinary abilities. That’s another reason why I want to revisit the graphic novel. Does it have the same ending and if so how was it managed b/c I didn’t get why Hush was going thru these complex steps using the other villains to rile up Batman… for what reason? Just a bit annoying but at least the majority of this is pretty fun stuff (Batman & Catwoman teaming up!).
I was thinking during the viewing that these don’t really need Blu releases b/c the DVD will be decent for the animation… when I took the disc out I saw that I had put in the DVD and not the Blu so it proved me correct b/c I truly thought I was watching the Blu. Hell I may throw in the Blu and watch it again just to compare.
