A harrowing account of the how the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown was handled during the days after 3/11 happened in 2011. It’s as if the filmmakers watched SHIN GODZILLA and said, “we can make a good movie about the real disaster that actually happened.” Placing Ken Watanabe in the center also adds to that Godzilla vibe. I wasn’t sure I’d be into this movie but it’s really crafted tastefully and presents the real drama and desperation of the situation.
Watanabe and Koichi Sato get most of the screentime but both are really great. You get a good sense of the decisions and missteps surrounding the attempts to control the power plant and prevent a massive disaster. I really felt sad for those workers that were exposed to high radiation during their mission. If there’s any drawback to the movie it’s the overly melodramatic epilogue that wasn’t needed, IMO. That plus the American soldier stuff that’s wedged into the story.
