Viewing Notes

I have a JP dvd for this released in one of those magazine editions but doesn’t include subtitles. Picked it up in a bargain bin at G-Fest years ago. Glad DKUTV is screening this for their Jeopardy in July series this month. Apparently Haruo Nakajima is in this as the PM’s driver. That’s cool.

I refuse to believe that Hiroshi Fujioka, the main star of the film, was only 26 when this was produced. His character has the best arc but it kills me that he’s like “I don’t know if I love my girlfriend enough to marry her” over and over yet risks his life for her. Dude. That’s Ayumi Ishida and she’s gorgeous. Of course you love her.

Overall an interesting film that’s clinical in its approach for most of the runtime. Reminded me of my college Earth Science class at times. Miniature work is decent as expected from Toho and the imagery callback to Hiroshima was clearly intentional. For me it was fascinating to view this movie after watching FUKUSHIMA 50 last night. Two films dealing with a major earthquake and subsequent tsunami threatening the whole of Japan. Would’ve been better to view this film first to see a hypothetical situation then the real deal.

Lorne Greene is listed but he doesn’t appear in this version. Wonder if they meant for the US edit? Also I didn’t see Nakajima and I was looking for him. I’m happy Toho continued to give him work but he deserved more than these bit parts. tbh I’m surprised that Akihiko Hirata is not in this movie.
