Our Time, Our Story (2002)

Directed by Hsiao Chu-chen

Documentary | History

Overview

Richly illustrated with film clips and interviews, OUR TIME, OUR STORY tells the still-evolving story of the Taiwanese “new wave,” from its rise in the early 1980s, as the island was democratizing after decades under martial law, through growing international recognition and domestic debate in the 1990s. Spearheaded in its early years by such filmmakers as Edward Yang, Ko I-cheng, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Wan Jen, the movement revitalized Taiwan cinema through low-budget experiments that emphasized personal stories, political reflection and stylistic invention. Said filmmakers, writers and actors like Wu Nien-jen and Sylvia Chang, even “second wave” directors Tsai Ming-liang and Lin Cheng-sheng provide fond reminiscences and retrospective insights in this compelling account of one of the most distinctive national cinemas of the last quarter-century.

Viewing Notes

Probably the wrong thing to be watching right now. Like I need more inspiration to watch more movies. But I have to return this to library tonight sooooo…

This is really nice. It’s also a bonus disc/feature on the BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY Criterion release, which is on my wishlist. I’m guessing that they didn’t remaster it from the dvd version so it probably won’t look any better (plus it’s a widescreen forced into a 4:3 ratio).

I really like the history of how these outsiders found each other and made films different than what was being produced in HK and imported to Taiwan. It’s also frustrating to view all the clips and discussion of films I’ve yet to see.

There’s a few of the early New Taiwan Cinema flicks on Prime but now to find the time to watch! I love the short scene of the visit to CMPC archive and all the 35mm film cans they have but also sad knowing that it likely no longer exists now.
