Quirky almost-comedy but more drama romance about a middle-aged woman living alone and accepting that her life is uneventful as she documents each day. Until she strikes up a friendship with a younger co-worker, which changes her life. This is a perfectly fine indie almost-comedy drama. Billed as a comedy on the JAPAN CUTS site but I don’t see it that way esp. with this older woman dealing with her solitary lifestyle and what it means that she hasn’t married or had children and now it’s too late. She goes to a bar nearly every night and has a drink alone or she has a drink at home. It’s sad! That’s not comedy!
What is rather sweet is presenting a middle-aged woman as someone who still has the chance to find love. This is a very touchy subject in Japan as most woman are considered no longer desirable after they turn 30. It’s nuts and has gotten a little better but it’s still the prevalent idea that if you’re a woman and not married by 30 you’re Christmas Cake (unwanted). Fucked up shit but at least this movie flips that notion on its ear. So give it credit for that.
