A very silly yet entertaining “save our school” romp with quite a cast of young stars (and creditable veterans). Listed as a “family comedy” which seems odd given the amount of innuendo jokes. Maybe they just thought “oh the kids won’t get that stuff?” Feels a lot like a live action of a manga then I later learned that it is based off a comic strip that ran in the late 40s created and drawn by Ronald Searle. It’s very absurd and over the top but humorous.
Gemma Arterton was 21 when this was released. Crazy. Wild to see Lena Headey in such a sedate role as the homely english teacher. Oh also neat to see another early role by Jodie Whittaker among others.
When I picked this up from the library I knew this was another Before-Times request and couldn’t figure out why I placed the hold. Then when I saw the cast I realized it was because it stars Talulah Riley, whom I had just seen in BLOODSHOT (back in March, sigh) and wondered what else she had done. After doing a search for her in my InterLoan db this title popped up and looked interesting so there it is. She was also 21 when this was released yet in this film looks so much younger than Gemma.
Also it was neat to see Girls Aloud perform in this as the school band. Can’t believe I’m already nostalgic for the mid ‘00s.
