Tora-san, an itinerant peddler who is thrown out of his father’s house twenty years before but reconnects with his aunt, uncle and sister Sakura. Tora wreaks some havoc in their lives, like getting drunk and silly at a marriage meeting and ruining Sakura’s chance to marry someone, as well as just being a real pain to those around him. There is a sentimental side to him also, and the best way to describe him is that he grows on you.

In addition to the features bundle, I decided to plop down the 12 bucks for the “Classics Bundle” which is three specially selected films from the Tora-San film series. These were included for the JAPAN CUTS film festival bc they were screening the new film, TORA-SAN WISH YOU WERE HERE.
I’ve seen this first movie before back when the dvds were available via Netflix. I shoulda just bought that 4-film set from Amazon at the time b/c now it’s OOP and pricey.
I forgot how much happens in this movie! So much going on but all so deftly managed and so amusing. Kiyoshi Atsumi is a treasure. Hard to believe he was 41 at the time of release. Seems so much younger. His sister Sakura (Chieko Baisho) was 28 at the time of release; she also seems portrayed younger. Really adore this movie. Love when Takashi Shimura shows up in the perfect role.
