This was the second Tora-san feature in the Classic Bundle, selected for the JAPAN CUTS festival specifically for the new Tora-san film, Tora-san, Wish You Were Here, which references this movie.
I hadn’t seen this one so I was excited to view another Tora-san adventure. I really, really love these movies and how they depict family and humor as it relates to Japan and the particular time period. Love seeing 70s Japan. This film, the 15th in the series (the longest running film series in Japan), takes place a handful of years after the first movie and now Sakura’s son Mitsuo is a 6 or 7 year old child. Tora-san has an old flame in Lily (Ruriko Asaoka) that he loves but can’t admit it. Very sweet movie.
Very happy that JAPAN CUTS added a few of these Tora-san films b/c there’s no other way to view these currently in the United States. They’ve recently been remastered so I’m hoping they get a good release because more ppl should be able to view these wonderful films. I know the boxset would be pricey but absolutely worth it. Kiyoshi Atsumi is a treasure.
