Viewing Notes

Another “war is hell” film this time about a band of operatives infiltrating the North Korean army to get the location of mines and ultimately sabotage the beach defense so the US Navy can launch a successful siege onto land and retake Seoul during the Korean War. This is a solid film with some crazy setpieces. The bar shootout sequence when the spies are discovered is brutal but the hospital chase is bananas.

I’ve grown less fond of war films over the recent years b/c unlike other action or fantasy or whatever films, the war happened and people died. Often thousands of people lost their lives. Even if the story has been embellished such as this one likely has, there still was this group of soldiers that fought and died to make this mission a success. For some reason it just hits me harder and depresses me even tho it was ultimately a victory for the right side.

It was nice to see some good non-Korean actors in a big Korean production for a change (Neeson & Gries). I liked what Neeson had to say about taking on the role of General MacArthur but I wish the their had been a longer making-of / BTS featurette rather than a few short interviews. I was amazed that they constructed that entire beach battalion seen in the finale which was enormous.
