The odd framing device (supposedly set in 2045 on Mars) is completely unnecessary and actually detracts from the excellent topic of indigenous forest people in the rural mountainous regions of Vietnam. In that sense it is a good documentary hearing about these people and their lives in their own language, an obscure dialect of Vietnamese. However, the voice over w/the “science fiction” narrative just pulls me out of the film for those minutes.
This is another side of Vietnam I haven’t seen so it was neat in that respect. Just wish it had been a traditional documentary and spent more time learning about these lives and how they’ve been affected from living in caves to moving to the plains.
