Toshirō Mifune is hot tempered clan leader Goemon who hates the samurai so he trains and empowers his farmers to battle against them. This is a fun movie that is done as a throwback to the 1950s chanbara cinema in Japan from the overacting (mostly Mifune) to the black & white treatment. Even the makeup looks like a silent film done as a talkie. Quite odd at times esp. Mifune’s look but it mostly works and has some nice character moments from this excellent cast out of the Toho Studio system. Yuriko Hoshi is simply divine. Neat to see Ko Nishimura here as I usually associate him with Nikkatsu.
This was one of four movies that I hadn’t seen in DKUTV’s Mifune samurai marathon happening this weekend so I was glad to see it.
