Viewing Notes

This movie has almost the exact same premise* as the previous film THE MILLION GAME in Mike’s watch party this week, themed “contest of people hunting other people” which is a cool triple feature idea. (the third movie was SERIES 7 THE CONTENDERS, which I skipped bc I watched it way back around the time it was released and I wanted to listen to the rest of the Cubs game and play FE trivia).

Anyways, this version of the story is also a stab at society and bloodlust in an extreme game show however this satire is not humorous. It’s a real thrill ride with all the added social commentary about how entertainment is rigged in favor of higher ratings. I’d go even farther that the statement presented here is a loosely veiled critique of both the corporate and political structures.

Whereas THE MILLION GAME spent more time on the game show studio and crowd interaction, this movie takes the viewer behind the scenes with the producers of the tv program to show how vile their motives are. Also the action beats are way better here including a scramble up a construction site and some mad chases.

* just noticed that both films have the same story credit of Robert Sheckley who wrote the novel “The Prize of Peril” so these are both adaptations of the same book! Doh
