Been wanting to see this movie for a long time (since I started going to the Alamo Drafthouse and specifically Fantastic Fest*) and it’s been sitting on the shelf at my library this whole time!
Okay. This is not a good movie but it has some good moments. And it would make a stellar B-Fest screening (if they actually chose decent flicks ). Some great practical FX on display and legit terror with the giant rats. Also so many stonewashed jeans! So. Many.
The hilarity is in much of the prop work and composite shots as well as the general staging of the live rats versus puppets. At least six times you can see the (giant) human handler in the background of a “live rat meant to be giant rat” scene. It’s incredible they shot this and just left it in like “fuck it who cares.” There’s at least one boom mic sighting.
Hell, fuck B-Fest. I’d like to see this in a regular ole horror movie marathon a la Terror in the Aisles / The Massacre style.
*they use the clip of giant kid Bobby telling Neil “I’d like you to get the fuck out of here” for one of the no-talking PSAs.
(There’s no disclaimer at the end of the credits about animals not being harmed which saddened me bc I’m fairly positive several rats were killed during production.)
