Viewing Notes
This was a surprise! I honestly thought this movie had an entirely different premise! Always thought it was some kind of “home for holidays” Christmas flick so I never really bothered with it. Decided to request it for my 20 in 2020 project since I’m trying to view films released in 2000 that I haven’t seen in a long while or not seen at all. I really only knew that Affleck was the star of this.
Imagine my surprise when it opens in the prison… then Charlize Theron enters the picture. Damn, had I known that in addition to it being a heist flick I would’ve jumped on this sooner. This is a fun movie even with so much overacting by nearly everyone esp. Gary Sinise, who is comical. But I love all the twists and turns and total bananas action beats.
The director’s cut is interesting compared to the edited scenes they include on the Blu. For example in the DC that motel sex scene is longer and little more graphic. Much of those scenes don’t change a whole lot but it’s nice to see them. Hard to believe this was twenty years ago… Affleck and Theron are so young! Hearing them talk about the movie in the making-of featurette is wild. They were both in such a different place in their careers.
